Things to Know Before You Adopt a Shih Tzu

There are few things that can compare with an adorable Shih Tzu puppy - the big eyes, soft coat, floppy ears…everything about the little baby can make your heart melt. This is the Shih Tzu's downfall, however, because many times someone will adopt a Shih Tzu without thinking ahead and deciding if the pup will really fit into their life.

Before you adopt a Shih Tzu puppy think of all the daily grooming that it will require - is someone in your family willing to take responsibility to keep Fifi looking her best? What about walks, veterinary visits, mud, accidents on your carpet, and dog sitters? Before you adopt be sure someone will always be there for your pup and ready to keep it looking and feeling top notch.

Once you have decided that the Shih Tzu is the best for you then the fun part comes into play - finding the perfect pup for your family! This in itself, however, should be gone about very carefully to ensure getting the best possible puppy.

When looking to adopt a Shih Tzu the most important thing to be decided is the kennel to adopt from. You will probably be wise to visit a potential breeder and note the following things about the dogs and facility:

• Are the dogs friendly?
• Do they look well cared for, healthy, and happy?
• Is the facility clean and kept up?
• Is the breeder friendly and concerned about the well being of the pup you might adopt?
• Would you be pleased if your pup turned out like his dogs?

Before you adopt a Shih Tzu pup from a kennel, be absolutely comfortable with the breeder's reputability and the dog's care. Once you've decided the breeder, there comes the nearly impossible task of choosing just one puppy!
