Early Shih Tzu Training -- Grooming Basics

This may be one of the most important steps in Shih Tzu training if you plan to let your pup's hair grow long and beautiful. Your pup must learn to accept grooming and handling in order for this to be possible.

The first session should be taken on with a soft bristle brush. While the pup is in your lap, stroke him all over with the brush, talking to him in a calm voice. Roll him on his back to groom his underside. Carefully brush his tail. Talk to him all through the session and when you are done, give him a treat. This will show him that grooming is a rewarding experience - he'll get a treat if he behaves!

If he tries to bite or play with the brush, tell him "no" and keep going. If you stop after his bad behavior this is showing him that when he misbehaves, he gets his way.

Keep these first sessions short and sweet -- 5 or so minutes. Also make sure that you brush gently; if the brushing is painful to him, your pup may learn to resent being brushed. As you brush, you and your pup will grow closer together -- another step in Shih Tzu training and another step toward having a beautiful, well-behaved companion.
