Early Shih Tzu Training -- Handling Your Pup

After your Shih Tzu pup masters his name and begins to accept grooming, it's time for the next step in Shih Tzu training. Your pup must now learn to accept being handled from head-to-toe.

Feet -- a grass seed, thorn, long nails, or any number of other things can easily spell a foot problem…your Shih Tzu pup must learn to have his feet picked up and looked over. This is not an easy thing for a dog to get used to, so be patient with your little pup. Hold your pup in your lap, stroking him until he is relaxed. Continue stroking him with one hand as you, with your free hand, gently touch his feet. Stop touching his feet after a few seconds and continue to enjoy your time together. Repeat the exercise over time in various positions and places, touching for longer periods of time. The time will come when your pup should remain calm as your check over his pads and toes. Reward with treats and praise at the end of each session.

Ears -- floppy-eared dogs occasionally have ear problems and your pup should be conditioned to ear checks also. Fondle your Shih Tzu pup's ears - your pup should love this, and soon he'll be very relaxed. Lift each ear and stroke the underneath. As you do this, take a look inside each ear and then end the session with a treat and lots of verbal praise. When he is comfortable with his ears being touched, pluck a few hairs out from the opening of his ear to get him used to the procedure when he is older.

Mouth -- taking pills or getting a teeth check up is something that no one particularly likes -- your Shih Tzu pup is no exception. With a few tricks though, your pup will soon be used to the idea. Before beginning, supply yourself with a cache of canine chocolate drops (yes, you read me right). Don't ever give your pup human chocolate, however, because it contains a chemical that is toxic to dogs. With one hand underneath your pup's lower jaw and one hand over his muzzle, gently pull open your pup's mouth. Promptly drop in a chocolate drop and praise him well. Your pup may be a little upset with you until he tastes the chocolate, but he'll soon forget any hard feelings. With a few more times of practice, your little pup will be will than willing to cooperate - anything to get his treat! Make it extra special by saving the drops for training only, so he won't get tired of them.

When starting into Shih Tzu training, use these tips to make your pup into a easy to handle dog. However, to make your dog loveable - that's something that won't require a bit of training!
