Shih Tzu Training Trick...

               Easy And Fast!

Flying Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu training should include the basic commands sit, down and stay and then your dog can progress to master all kinds of tricks

Let's cover three basic examples.

Sit Command.

Get your Shih Tzu's favorite treats. Hold a treat out to your dog so she can smell it. With the treat in your hand, just above her nose, say "Sit". The first time, 'show' your Shih Tzu what you expect. Give her rear a nudge towards the ground with a firm hand. When your she sits, say "Good Sit!" and reward her with the treat. Repeat the word "sit" to encourage the learning process. Repeat until your dog associates obeying the command with getting a treat and verbal praise. Once she is comfortable with the trick, you can eventually stop giving her the treat and rely on verbal praise only.

Down Command.

Once you and your Shih Tzu have mastered "sit", the next command is "down". Again we will use the treats and verbal praise.

Have your Shih Tzu sit. Once she is sitting, hold the treat under her chest, out of the reach of her mouth. She will have to lie down to get the treat. Say "Down" or "Lie Down" or "Lie". If necessary, hold the treat on the floor. Continue to repeat the command until the dog does what you want. Give her the treat and say "Good Down!" Gradually wean off the treats. Consistency is a real Shih Tzu training trick!

Stay Command.

Have your Shih Tzu sit. Have a friend assist you by holding your dog by the collar. Now back up about 6 or 7 feet and command to "stay". Have your partner release the dog and she will come to the treat. Reward with treat and praise. Do this until your dog can do it without someone holding her.

More Shih Tzu Training Tips.

Once you make some progress, you can use clickers, hand motions or other signals instead of voice commands.

Be consistent. If you issue a command, the dog must comply.

Do not issue commands you can reasonably assume the dog will not obey. Don't call your Shih Tzu if she is running full speed away from you.

Be gentle, but insistent.

Are you getting the response you desire from your Shih Tzu training? Or are you getting very frustrated? The real trick is to learn as much as you can about the Shih Tzu temperament. .
